"Looking back at my article from a year ago, there was optimism at the opportunity we had to meet up with family and friends, although the threat of the Omicron variant was still very much a concern.
We may not be quite so preoccupied with covid, but the broader legacy of the pandemic means it still has a profound impact on our lives.
The measures taken to tackle covid and to support individuals, businesses and our public services required an unprecedented level of public spending.
Twelve months on we have the added devastation wrought by Putin in Ukraine and the energy crisis that has brought the world into a new and extremely difficult period of instability.
The impact of this is of course felt directly by everyone.
It would be easy to think there is little we can do in the face of these events, but action is being taken and there is determination to emerge from this period stronger as a result.
Stronger in our resolve to face down Putin and to defend the democratic freedoms we hold dear, stronger in our ambition to meet our Net Zero targets, stronger in our purpose to protect people and the public services we rely on.
The British people have shown time and again their ability to handle adversity and it is this above all that will enable us to weather this period. The incredible ingenuity and creativity to develop and grow businesses, but also the great generosity towards and compassion for others.
We are a nation that cares about its communities, its neighbours and its place in the world.
I have been very fortunate to meet some extraordinarily dedicated and talented people across the
businesses, organisations, charities and community groups we have here in East Hampshire, and they continue to impress and inspire.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who will once again be supporting those most in need over the festive period, and to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year."
